Pre-development testing was undertaken in Laharan, Killorglin, at the intersection of School Street and Iveragh Road. The development comprises the construction of a three-storey 2041m2 area services centre containing County Council offices, a library, a tourist office, a courthouse, a canteen and a garda station. The former Killorglin railway station was sited at the development site. It was opened in 1883 and closed in 1960. Nine test-trenches were opened across the site by a mechanical digger using a 2m-wide flat ditching bucket. The total length of trenching was 495m. The topsoil comprised a mid- to dark-brown silty clay loam with occasional rubble from railway infrastructure. The subsoil consisted of a light-yellow/brown sandy clay. No archaeological features or artefacts were recorded in the trenches.
Further testing remains to be undertaken when demolition of a building fronting onto the Iveragh Road has taken place.
