Testing took place in May and June 2004 at several locations in and around the west side of the 'village' on the Great Blasket Island in advance of an application for planning permission to build a café and store, to build small extensions to three of the Congested District Board houses and to install septic tanks and percolation areas. Thirteen trenches in all were opened. Nothing of archaeological significance was noted in any of the trenches.
Later on in the summer, when it was deemed necessary for further percolation tests to take place before any of the septic tanks could be sanctioned, an extension to the original licence was obtained to enable the archaeologist to monitor the digging of five separate sets of two holes, generally 0.65m wide by 2–3m in length. The first three of these sets were close to where some of the original trenches had been dug earlier in the summer, another was dug further east within the village and the final set was dug at the extreme eastern end of the village. Nothing of archaeological significance was found in any of the pits.
