This megalithic structure is located inside a curious stone enclosure known locally as 'The City', on the immediate north-eastern side of the Paps Mountains, at Gortnagane, Rathmore. The purpose of the test excavation was to ascertain the significance of what appears to be the remains of a megalithic structure recorded on the OS first-edition map as a 'cromlech'. The feature consists of one upright stone and one large slab of bedrock. A single trench measuring 4m by 3m was opened around the stones. Modern glass was found at the base of the upright stone, apparently the result of digging which was carried out in the early part of the 20th century. A shallow pit containing charcoal was excavated at the base of the bedrock outcrop. The charcoal from this feature was retained for dating. No artefacts or other datable material was recovered from this test excavation.
