An archaeological impact assessment report was undertaken in response to a request for further information from the Department of Marine and Natural Resources following an application for a licence to undertake mussel farming at Douglas Strand, Cromane, Co. Kerry. The proposed bottom culture mussel bed is situated parallel to the southern shore of Castlemaine Harbour. The strand area is composed of rough limestone and shingle, with parts of the eastern area at the HWM nicely constructed with a sloping revetment of local stone. Otherwise the bank is greatly eroded, with areas of turf exposed here and there. The proposed bed extends over 18ha and is comprised of soft estuarine mud or sloblands. The entire area was examined at low tide. A small number of potential features clearly visible in the blank vastness of the mud were physically examined; all turned out to be trees. No archaeological features or artefacts were noted.
