Monitoring was carried out during August 2004 in advance of a housing development in Carrigeendaniel, Tralee. The initial phase of topsoil-stripping revealed two areas of archaeological potential, which were excavated during September and November 2004. The second phase of topsoil-stripping is due to be carried out in January 2005.
Site 1 was located at the northern end of the development and consisted of two sub-oval pits and a linear feature. Both pits were over 1m in length and contained small amounts of burnt bone, heat-shattered stones and much charcoal. The linear feature was only partially excavated, as it extended into an area of the development that will remain undisturbed. The excavated portion of the linear trench measured 1.86m north-south and varied in width from 0.6m to 0.65m. It reached a maximum depth of 0.32m and the fill contained occasional charcoal fragments and small, heat-fractured stones.
