Monitoring of groundworks at two adjacent developments in High Street, Tuam, Co. Galway, took place on 10 February 2004. The proposed developments were within the zone of archaeological potential for the town of Tuam (SMR 29:199). Prior to the commencement of the developments, the sites contained two buildings that were part of a late19th/early 20th-century terrace of houses which fronted onto High Street with flat-roofed extensions to the rear and back gardens.
The area excavated for both adjoining developments was the area of the flat-roofed extensions to the rear, and the back gardens. This area measured 20m north-south and 15–16m wide. An area measuring 1–1.5m wide was left unexcavated along the east site boundary. The depth of excavation for the proposed raft foundation was 0.5–0.7m.
Below the concrete and topsoil on the surface was rubble fill and grey/yellow plastic silty clay loam. The topsoil and rubble fill contained modern artefacts. The stratigraphy represented evidence of modern activity only, associated with the terrace of houses along High Street.
