Testing was carried out at Templemartin, Craughwell, Co. Galway, between 23 and 24 March 2004 on behalf of Bord Gáis Éireann. The proposed development involved the installation of a gas pipeline connecting Craughwell with Galway city. The route was close to a church and graveyard.
Testing took the form of a single centre-line trench with perpendicular offsets at 10m alternate intervals. A further two trenches were excavated to the northwest of the site to investigate the archaeological potential of a boundary wall. In total the trenches had a cumulative length of c. 265m by 1.6m in width.
Testing exposed a single pit, located half way along the centre-line, that was half sectioned but contained no finds of archaeological significance. According to the landowner, the area had been extensively cleared by bulldozer in the 1970s. The boundary wall to the north-east was machine-built, evidenced by the large boulders used in its construction. No other finds or features were identified and there was no evidence of inhumations associated with the church site.
