Test excavation was carried out on the site of a proposed housing development at Oranhill on 7–8 January 2004. The development site is located c. 40m north-east of a large ringfort/souterrain monument, named 'Oran Fort' on OS maps. A tracked excavator fitted with a wide toothless bucket was retained to open five trenches (60–130m long) on the footprint of the proposed development. The stratigraphy was uniform across the tested area, with mid-brown silty clay topsoil, averaging 0.4m in thickness, overlying patches of orange clay subsoil and grey silty/sandy clay natural. No archaeological material was discovered during testing.
