Monitoring was carried out at Lackaghbeg, Co. Galway, in February 2004. The proposed development involved the construction of 32 houses near a children's burial ground located to the north of the site. Monitoring took place of the mechanical stripping of an area measuring c. 210m (north-south) by 100m (maximum). The stratigraphy exposed changed with the natural slope from a dark-brown silty clay with frequent stones to the north of the site to a peatier material overlying an orange sandy clay to the south. On average, 0.35m of topsoil was removed, exposing a layer of shattered limestone and natural boulder clay.
Finds retrieved from these deposits consisted of domestic refuse and modern debris. A number of modern green, blue and clear bottle-glass sherds were found, as well as a small amount of window glass. Other finds included nails and a number of clay-pipe stems. No finds or features of archaeological significance were noted.
