Monitoring of trial pits and bore holes was undertaken at the site of a proposed landfill in the townlands of Killagh More, Ballybaun and Ballintober in east Galway. Previous work in the area had included an assessment and pre-development testing (Excavations 2003, No. 730, 03E1434). The monitoring of test-pits was carried out during October 2004. Trial pits of various dimensions were excavated throughout the proposed development site that indicated deep levels of peat, up to 3.9m, in the centre of the site. Where peat was not encountered, the stratigraphy generally consisted of topsoil overlying a gravelly clay. The only finds from the monitoring were occasional fragments of wood, but none showed any signs of being worked.
