Monitoring of topsoil-stripping during the second phase of a housing development in Kilgarve townland, Ballinasloe, Co. Galway, took place between 13 and 21 January 2004. The monitoring was necessary due to the location of the developmentwithin the constraint of an enclosure (SMR 88:17). Monitoring of topsoil-stripping during the first phase of the development had taken place in May and June 2003 (Excavations 2003, No. 728).
Below the topsoil was orange/brown firm silty clay loam, grey loose loamy sand, grey friable sandy silt loam, orange/grey/brown friable silt loam and orange/grey/brown friable clay loam, all sterile natural subsoils. Modern artefacts were recovered from the topsoil. Nothing of archaeological significance was uncovered.
