Four trenches were mechanically excavated in the course of pre-development testing at Kilcolgan at a site close to a castle site and to early ecclesiastical remains. The stratigraphy revealed was similar and generally consisted of sod and topsoil overlying a grey natural gravel. Below the topsoil in Trench C a deposit of shells (oyster and periwinkle) was uncovered 15m north of the south end. This deposit extended for a length of 1.7m north-south and was 0.15–0.25m deep. A fragment of 20th-century pottery was also recovered from this deposit.
