Test excavation was carried out on the site of a proposed dwelling at Grange, Co. Galway, on 4 November 2004. The site is partly located within the area of constraint around an ecclesiastical site comprising a ruinous church and children's burial ground. A JCB excavator fitted with a wide toothless digging bucket was retained to open five trenches on the footprint of the proposed development. The stratigraphy was uniform with grey/brown sandy silt topsoil, 0.15m deep, overlying light-orange/brown silty sand subsoil. Outcrops of tan-coloured clayey sand natural were noted across the tested area, most frequently on the higher ground in the south-east part of the site. No archaeological material was discovered.
