An excavation was carried out to the north of Eyre Square from 3 to 18 November 2004 in an area formerly used as a taxi rank and carriageway, on behalf of Galway City Council in advance of development as part of the Eyre Square re-enhancement project. Previous testing carried out in June 2004 (03E1786) exposed the structural remains of an L-shaped foundation possibly related to an early 19th-century building.
A number of features were exposed, including wall footings, a stone-lined latrine, an ash pit and three successive metalled surfaces. Finds retrieved included a significant amount of post-medieval pottery and tile, three gold-plated pins, a section of gold wire, an amber bead, early clay-pipe bowls, leather-shoe fragments, a struck flint and substantial deposits of animal bone.
