Test excavations were carried out near the site of a settlement complex at Carrowkeel, Co. Galway. The settlement lies immediately north of the route of the proposed N6 Galway-Ballinasloe national road scheme. An archaeological geophysical survey recorded linear anomalies within the footprint of the road and these were interpreted as remnants of banks or ditches and possible cultivation remains.
The main aims of testing were to ascertain the character of these features and, if possible, their relationship to the adjacent settlement. No significant archaeological features were discovered by testing, however, and the geophysical anomalies were found to be spurious features or of natural origin.
