Test excavation was carried out on the site of a proposed dwelling at Cargin, Co. Galway, on 24 September 2004. The site is located within the area of archaeological constraint around an ecclesiastical site. A JCB excavator fitted with a wide toothless digging bucket was retained to open three trenches across the site. The stratigraphy was uniform, with sterile grey/brown silty sand topsoil, 0.25m deep, overlying orange/brown silty sand subsoil in all trenches. No archaeological material was discovered.
