A single trench was opened by hand at the site of an enclosure in Cahernamuck West townland on the Loughrea link of the proposed N6 Galway–Ballinasloe road scheme. The site was discovered during an environmental impact statement and is not a recorded monument. The proposed roadway will not impact on the enclosure but will impact on the linear bank near the western field boundary.
The trench was opened along the eastern limit of the road corridor. It measured 20m in length and 1m in width.
A simple stratigraphy was noted during excavation. Sod overlay a number of very slightly different deposits of silty-clay subsoil. A number of shallow depressions (possible furrows) were noted during excavation of these deposits. A sample was taken for environmental analysis.
These silty-clay deposits overlay the bank material at the site. The bank was formed of an orange to red-brown silty clay and measured 2.94m wide by 0.22m high. This overlay a creamy-grey glacial till. No finds of an archaeological nature were made during excavation of these sediments.
