Two trenches were mechanically excavated in the course of pre-development testing at North Gate Street, Athenry, Co. Galway. The stratigraphy revealed in Trenches A and B was similar and consisted of the concrete surface coming down onto a layer of rubble. This rubble overlay the natural gravel, which contained large boulders. No artefacts or features of archaeological significance were uncovered in these trenches, which were excavated to a maximum depth of 0.7m.
