The development on this site comprised an Aldi supermarket, a block of retail units and associated car parking and provision of services. The closest known monument to the site was SMR 21:16, recorded as a road that linked Clondalkin with Tallaght, crossing the Naas road in the vicinity of Newlands Cross. As it was suggested that the original laneway crossed the current development site, testing had been carried out by Sylvia Desmond in 1996 (96E0362) in relation to a previous planning application. Evidence for a laneway was exposed, but it was post-medieval in date and there was no evidence for an earlier road.
Archaeological features were not observed in any of the nine test-trenches and no artefacts of archaeological significance were recovered. No evidence for the old road was exposed in any of the trenches.
