The proposed development site is located in the grounds of Casino Cottage, Malahide, Co. Dublin. Casino Cottage is a single-storey thatched dwelling house constructed in the late 17th century with a major extension added in 1837. It was originally a shooting lodge for the Talbot family and remained their property until 1927. The lands to the immediate west, east and north of the cottage are scheduled for the development of 115 apartments with associated services and landscaping. Previous monitoring by Eoin Corcoran of the excavation of trial pits and CRDs on the site took place in April 2003 (Excavations 2003, No. 642, 03E0451).
Monitoring of the large-scale topsoil clearance took place in April/June 2004. The topsoil was removed to an average depth of 0.3m exposing the underlying orange-brown clay subsoil. No artefacts or stratigraphy of an archaeological nature were identified.
