Monitoring was carried out in conjunction with construction of a temporary carpark at the Bow Street Distillery, Smithfield, Dublin 7. The development involved the extension of the present surface carpark and the creation of a new site entrance on to Church Street New. This involved ground reduction of c. 0.5m in two areas (A and B).

Area A measured a maximum of 30m by 16m. It was located on the northern side of the main cobbled driveway and was under grass prior to development. This area was reduced by c. 0.5m and the material removed comprised a mid-brown clay with very occasional rubble fragments. There were occasional indications that this clay sealed a deposit or layer of loose rubble.

Area B measured a maximum of 12m by 10m. It was located on the southern side of the main cobbled driveway and was under grass prior to development. This area was reduced by c. 0.5m and the material removed comprised a mid-brown clay with very occasional rubble fragments.

It appears that in both areas topsoil had been imported onto the site to create grass beds. No archaeological material or deposits were identified during the course of development works.
