An impact assessment report including pre-development testing was carried out at a proposed development site comprising new shop fronts, change of use of first-, second- and third-floor showrooms to apartments, demolition of existing extension to the rear and the erection of a four-storey building at the rear of the site fronting onto Jervis Lane, Dublin. The site is within the zone of archaeological potential for Dublin city (SMR 18:20) and is located beside two protected structures, 53 and 56 Capel Street.
Testing was carried out on 2 June. There were two trenches excavated in the north and south of the garden area to the rear of 54 and 55 Capel Street. The stratigraphic sequence differed between the two trenches, with natural subsoils evident in Trench 2, while the layers within Trench 1 comprised demolition rubble and backfill to a depth of up to 3m. Nothing of archaeological importance was uncovered.
