This licence was extended in 2004 to assess the overall impact of this development on the archaeological potential of Ellis Quay. Previous testing (Excavations 2003, No. 528) suggested that the earliest occupation along Ellis Quay was 19th-century. It was possible that vestiges of 17th- to 18th-century occupation could be found along the John Street frontage and possibly along Benburb Street. Testing suggested that any early foundations had been destroyed by 19th-century street frontage properties with cellars.
Monitoring of the ground reduction on this site showed that any 17th-century housing had been obliterated by later 19th- and 20th-century domestic and industrial development of this part of the city.
