The site was dealt with in two phases. Pre-development testing in advance of a proposed housing development was followed by excavation of the features uncovered, which is described separately (No. 480, Excavations 2004,04E0935). The site was located in agricultural land c. 500m south of the centre of Castleknock village and 400m east of the medieval motte and castle (SMR 18:12). A geophysical survey (04R052) revealed a number of anomalies. These included a series of ditch-like features and some small pits. Fourteen test-trenches were excavated around the features located during geophysics.

All archaeological features were assessed and planned. Post-medieval and medieval pottery was recovered, the latter densely distributed in one area at the south-west corner of the site. A stick pin and a bronze implement were also recovered. The archaeological areas were cordoned off for protection and full excavation was recommended.
