Archaeological mitigation was required on site in advance of development works. A new toilet facility and underpinning of structural walls was proposed to improve the facilities at the cathedral. The archaeological works consisted of monitoring ground-penetrating activities. A small area of the site was topsoil-stripped to a maximum depth of c. 2m. The topsoil removal revealed no evidence of archaeological features. The underpinning of structural walls involved the excavation of a single trench abutting the walls of the cathedral. No evidence of archaeological deposits was identified during the course of the monitoring.
Editor’s note: Although this licence was issued during 2004, the report on the work was not received in time for inclusion in the bulletin of that year.
