Trial-trenching was undertaken prior to the construction of a four-storey building. While an impact assessment had shown there were no monuments recorded within the confines of the development, a study of the first-edition OS 6-inch map had shown a building standing on, or close to, the site in 1834, which could therefore have been of 18th-century date. Two trenches were mechanically excavated across the site to the level of the natural sleech. They revealed that there was no trace of the building recorded on the first-edition OS map and that the ground surface of the area had been raised with a series of soil and stony layers with no evidence for pre-19th-century activity on the site. Nothing of archaeological significance was observed or uncovered during the investigation.
