A programme of archaeological survey and monitoring was carried out at the site of the An Grianán an Aileach hillfort in County Donegal between July and November 2004 on behalf of the Department of Environment, Heritage and Local Government. The project involved emergency works at the hillfort in order to prevent collapse. A section of walling was removed from the south-west side of the hillfort and subsequently rebuilt. Prior to the commencement of this work, a detailed survey of the stonework to be removed was carried out. An archaeological presence was also required at the site during removal of the wall section. Much of the material removed was judged to have been 20th-century rebuild. No evidence of the original structure was observed.
