The site was identified as an area of potential during the EIS stage of the N15 Bundoran to Ballyshannon bypass in the townlands of Rathmore and Finner. Further work was carried out during an archaeological earthwork survey undertaken by Babtie Pettit Ltd in November 2002. It was suggested that the site represented the remains of a post-medieval farmstead and associated features, including probable field boundaries and possible building remains. A testing programme undertaken by Billy Quinn in July 2003 (Excavations 2003, No. 427, 03E1015) confirmed the presence of positive archaeological features.
A 1600m2 excavation was undertaken. The main area of activity on the site focused on a building of drystone construction (Structure A), which may represent the remains of a dwelling associated with a possible farmstead. Finds associated with this building suggest a post-medieval date for the majority of activity on the site. A number of pits and furrows were also uncovered associated with the structure.
