An excavation, funded by Donegal County Council and the National Roads Authority, was completed in advance of the proposed N15 Bundoran to Ballyshannon bypass.
Linear testing (Excavations 2003, No. 427, 03E1015) was carried out by Billy Quinn along the route of the proposed scheme in summer 2003. Finner 2 was identified as a cairn (possible clearance cairn) in the EIS (EIS Sites 7b and 7c) in Plot 84b. This feature was deliberately not tested during the Stage 1 test excavation programme. Finner 2 is located c. 50m to the north-north-east of Finner 1 (No. 397, Excavations 2004, 04E0013).
Excavation revealed nothing of archaeological significance. It was clear during stripping that the limited amount of cairn material was a result of small-scale field clearance. The topsoil, which contained a small quantity of rounded clearance material, directly sealed natural bedrock. The bedrock was quite prominent at this location. No archaeological features or finds were uncovered during the excavation.
