Monitoring of the removal of topsoil was undertaken at the site of a new extension within the grounds of Carndonagh District Hospital. Two sites, a subrectangular enclosure and a standing stone with an incised cross, were located close to the development. Testing was undertaken by Eoin Halpin in 2001 (Excavations 2001, No. 268, 01E0598). Three trenches were machine excavated, one in each of the three arms of the building, accounting for roughly 50% of the development area. No archaeological deposits were uncovered during the testing.
The remaining area of the development, including a new access road, were subject to a further phase of archaeological mitigation during September 2004. Topsoil was removed to reveal a layer of building rubble up to 0.6m in depth, which overlay the original ground surface. This was a dark-brown clayey loam c. 0.3m deep. Below this was undisturbed orange gravelly clay subsoil. No archaeological deposits were uncovered during the investigation on the site.
