Monitoring of groundworks was carried out in June 2004 prior to a development at 20 Circular Road, Coleraine. The building that occupied the plot was demolished in order to redevelop the site to provide a ground-floor showroom with apartments.
Foundation trenches indicated that the previous building had been built on top of made ground, consisting of a series of sandy clays containing building debris. A stone-and-mortar retaining wall runs along the river at the back of the site, and the area appears to have been raised up to this level before the building was erected. These levels produced a small amount of 20th-century pottery and glass. No archaeological deposits were found to be surviving within the confines of the area under investigation.
