Testing was undertaken on behalf of Cork County Council on the route of the N8 Mitchelstown relief road, which involves the construction of 4.5km of the N8 from Cloonlough, south of Mitchelstown, to the junction of the R513 and the N8, north of Mitchelstown.
During the course of testing (No. 312 above, 04E0890), in addition to the programme of centre-line and offset testing, two target test-trenches (CH Site 26) were excavated at Chainage 4120 (under licence 04E0891) to investigate three courses of large dressed limestone blocks which had been noted by an archaeologist during geotechnical excavation of test-pits prior to the commencement of archaeological work. Topsoil 0.3m in depth overlay an orange clay subsoil in the trenches. No archaeological material was recorded in the trenches.
