Thirteen test-trenches were excavated on a site within the historic town of Mallow and close to the site of the Anglo-Norman Shortcastle. Trenches excavated in the northern part of the site indicated that the underlying bedrock sloped sharply down to the west and that much of the material overlying the natural boulder clays was recently dumped. Rich garden soils overlay the orange boulder clays in the southern part of the site. There was nothing of an archaeological nature noted in any of the trenches.
