Seven test-trenches were excavated at the site of the former Youghal Carpet (Yarns) factory at Killacloyne, Carrigtwohill, in east Cork. A subrectangular enclosure noted as standing within the site was not visible. Four trenches excavated in the vicinity of the enclosure indicated that up to 0.55m of redeposited mixed topsoil and subsoil underlay the dense undergrowth. The underlying boulder clays indicated that there was a natural fall of ground to the north and the redeposited material may have been brought in to fill a depression. A pond is noted at this location on recent maps. The remaining trenches were excavated in the areas surrounding the disused factory and all exposed a pink-brown subsoil overlying natural gravels. There was nothing of an archaeological nature noted in any of the trenches.
