An assessment of the site was carried out as part of a pre-planning application for redevelopment. One test-trench was excavated across the site. The top of a culvert was revealed in the trench. The portion revealed suggests a barrel-vaulted structure constructed of mortared sandstone. The culvert was aligned north-south and thus it appears to be the culvert carrying the Grand Parade waterway, which was covered over during the early 18th century.
