Testing was carried out at this 18th/19th-century mill/warehouse complex (formerly Young's Steam Mills) as part of a pre-planning assessment. The site is directly to the east of the site of the 13th-century Dominican Priory of St Mary's of the Isle, on an island to the south-west of the walled medieval city. Three 1m-wide trenches were excavated in the yard and outside the existing buildings. Stratigraphy consisted of 1–1.4m of made ground over a stiff grey/brown natural clay. The made ground contained stones, gravel and mortar; small amounts of shell, animal bone and 18th/19th-century glass and pottery were recovered in the south part of the site. The south face of a 1.4m-high, 4.7m-long, east-west mortared rubble wall of 18th/19th-century date was recorded below the modern surface in the yard in the middle of the site. Further testing has been recommended, subject to a planning decision.
