Two scorched areas suffering from coastal erosion on the west side of Scattery Island were investigated for associated remains and potential dating material in August 2004. One site is large (>14m long) and severely scorched, and might have been a medieval navigation light looking towards the mouth of the Shannon. The other area is smaller and less scorched, perhaps the site of a medieval scrub clearance bonfire. The work was carried out on behalf of the Heritage Service.
