Monitoring of topsoil removal was carried out on a site at Main Street, Quin, Co. Clare, ahead of the construction of six houses. The site lies within the constraint area of Quin Abbey, some 200m to the east, and St Fineen's Church (in ruins), some 120m to the east. Topsoil-stripping was carried out by a machine fitted with a toothless grading bucket between 9 and 16 March 2004. Across the site, a considerable thickness of fine, dark silty topsoil overlay yellow boulder clay and limestone bedrock. There was considerable disturbance, including a septic tank and a large fuel tank, at the street frontage, built in the footprint of a former house. No features or artefacts of archaeological significance were recorded.
