Testing was carried out in advance of the construction of a leisure centre, incorporating existing protected stable buildings, and nine apartments with associated site works. The Falls Hotel is a protected structure (No. 009) and the site of a castle is in the grounds of the hotel.
Jacinta Kiely had previously undertaken testing in an area to the north-west of the section of the hotel that incorporates the tower (Excavations 1998, No. 48, 98E0270).
Five trenches were excavated by tracked machine within the footprint of the development. Two small trenches were dug within a riparian context along the southerly extents of the proposed development. Two larger cuttings were opened in the location of a proposed swimming pool and gymnasium on level terrain extending to the south of the stables. A fifth trench was excavated to the south-west of the stable block to test the location of a stairwell projecting from the western elevation of the intended leisure centre.
Nothing of archaeological significance was uncovered during testing.
