The proposed Cavan bypass Stage 2 scheme commences at the existing N3, 1.5km east of Cavan town, extending in a predominantly south-west direction to the existing N55, c. 2.5km south-west of Cavan town. There is also a secondary link connecting the N55 at Moynehall to the Ballyjamesduff road.
A centre-line test-trench was excavated by machine with toothless bucket with alternate offset trenches at 20m intervals. A total of 5000 linear metres of test-trench were opened. Archaeological material uncovered was investigated and assigned site numbers 1-4; these were excavated under separate licences (see No. 100 above and Nos 125, 126 and 129 below).
All identified sites fell into a broad burnt-mound category, with the exception of field clearance evidence and services.
