Monitoring of topsoil removal at a site at Longparks, Greenisland, was undertaken ahead of a new housing development. An SMR site was located within the confines of the development. This site was noted from an aerial photograph as an elliptical cropmark measuring 50m (max.) in diameter, although there were no aboveground traces of it visible prior to the removal of topsoil.
The topsoil was removed across the entire development except for a small portion that was to remain as an open grassed area. There was no trace of archaeological deposits uncovered within the stripped area nor was there any trace of the noted AP site, although it is probable that this was caused by a variation in subsoil noted in the vicinity of the recorded position of the cropmark.
