Upon completion of the North-West Gas Pipeline, BGE (NI) intends to construct the Aghadowey to Ballymoney spur line, starting at the Aghadowey AGI and running for a distance of 8km, terminating at a new AGI situated on the eastern bank of the River Bann in Macfinn Lower some 7.5km to the south-east of Coleraine. Nine trial-trenches were investigated at three locations on the pipeline as part of an agreed programme of pre-construction evaluation.
Topsoil was stripped from the nine trenches, three each in Ballydevitt and Gills townlands, Co. Derry (see No. 348, Excavations 2003), and three in Colebreene Upper townland, Co. Antrim, using a mechanical excavator fitted with a flat-bottomed, toothless bucket. No archaeological remains were found in any of the trenches.
