Monitoring took place of the excavation of a tree-planting pit situated on the anticipated line of the town's 17th-century defensive ditch. The ditch was not found. The earliest phase was a series of late 17th- to early 18th-century pits overlain by a dark earth cultivation horizon and a later wall footing. The only finds of note were ceramic sherds attributable to the 'Potthouse', not usually found at such a distance from the presumed site of manufacture in Hill Street, some 200m to the south-east.
