Monitoring was in respect of the insertion of a gas distribution pipeline along the Main Street of Arklow, which is within the zone of archaeological potential for the town. The trench depth was 1.5m and the trench width 0.5m. Considering the limited access to the substrata along the main street, a surprisingly large amount of post-medieval material was revealed. This was represented by several box drains and deposits of household and construction debris. These features confirm that the present streetscape is relatively unchanged. The post-medieval deposits have survived as a result of little direct impact on the street, with the majority of services placed under the pavements. It must be stated that development work within the urban area of Arklow is potentially high risk.
