The proposed site of a single-house development is within the zone of archaeological potential (SMR 37:32) but outside the known area of the walled medieval town of Wexford. A limited test excavation was carried out in July 2001 (Excavations 2001, No. 1319). No material of archaeological significance was uncovered.
It was recommended that topsoil removal and other groundworks be monitored, as a limited area had been available for testing. Following this recommendation, standing buildings on the site were removed in late 2003 and the excavation of two engineering test-pits was monitored in December 2003. The stratigraphy in the pits was the same as that uncovered in the test excavation.
