Testing followed by monitoring was undertaken at John's Gate Street, Wexford, in accordance with a condition of planning permission to construct apartments. The monitoring was prompted by the results of testing on the site which identified the edge of a possible ditch running beneath the footprint of the proposed new structure. Monitoring of the foundation trenches confirmed the presence of the ditch running back from John's Gate Street.
The feature contained post-medieval pottery of probable 16th- or 17th-century date. The ditch was sealed by a number of floor surfaces constructed of mortar and tile which are believed to belong to a 19th-century malt kiln. The ditch was 4m wide and 0.65m deep. Its function remains unclear, but it is probable that it formed a curving boundary, reflected in the town morphology between John's Gate Street and Cornmarket.
