Testing was carried out in advance of construction of a restaurant and apartments. The present ground levels are largely the product of deposition of builders' rubble from the 19th century. This covers the site to a depth of c. 1.5m.
Two trenches were excavated in the northern half of the site. The southern half could not be tested, due to the need to prop up the southern boundary wall. The formation levels for the pile caps will be 1.72m OD. The pile caps (23 in number) or ground-beams will have no impact on the potential archaeological layers encountered in Trenches 1 and 2.
Both trenches encountered potential archaeological deposits at a depth of between 1.6 and 2m below the present ground surface. No artefacts were recovered from these layers and it is possible that they represent the remains of natural vegetation formed on the border between the estuary and the medieval town.
