Testing in advance of development was undertaken at Southknock, New Ross, in October 2003. Testing revealed a system of ridge-and-furrow cultivation, which appears to date to the 17th/18th centuries on the basis of pottery (North Devon ware) recovered from the fill. The licence was extended to include monitoring of construction works, which revealed that the soil across the site contained large quantities of pottery dating from the 16th/17th to the 20th century. Bellevue House, a protected structure located within the development site, dates to the middle of the 19th century, but it may be located on the site of a post-medieval house, which would account for the large quantities of post-medieval pottery recovered. Further monitoring will be undertaken in 2004.
