Testing was carried out at this development site in July 2003. The site is located to the north-east of St Mary's Church, built in the early 13th century, and to the south-west of the Fair Gate. Six trenches were excavated throughout the site, four of which contained archaeological features and deposits, which included pits containing medieval pottery, a drystone wall, a burnt layer containing medieval pottery and floor/roof tile, and a possible ditch.
The sub-structural element of the development was redesigned to take the archaeological deposits into account and preserve them in situ. The licence was extended to include monitoring of groundworks, which will be completed in 2004.
