Testing was undertaken at this site, as it is situated immediately to the west of Ferns Castle. Two trenches were excavated, the first of which contained a modern rubble and red brick soil deposit, with a maximum depth of 0.6m, which lay directly on shale bedrock. The second trench revealed a large cut, which was excavated to a depth of 1.5m (but not bottomed). The feature was filled with soil containing modern inclusions. It is possible that this is the fosse of Ferns Castle, which was only backfilled in this property in the last twenty years or so.
